Solihull Youngsters dig in for the community

Tuesday, 30 August, 2011

The young Conservatives of Solihull were out in force this Bank Holiday Weekend. In response to requests from local residents, the youngsters, along with Maggie Throup, Cllr Mark Parker and local campaigner Karen Grinsell all worked together on this rainy Saturday to clean up overgrown vegetation and litter in Shirley.

The recently formed Solihull Conservative Future is eager to make a difference in their community. Maggie Throup has been involved in the group's activity and was impressed with the group's energy and enthusiasm.

Maggie commented: "I feel it is important to allow our youngsters to express their positive commitment to their communities. I am so delighted to see the youths of Solihull giving back to their neighbourhood and putting Big Society into action."

It took the group of volunteers several hours to clear rubbish and overrun bushes and weeds by the communal garages on Blenheim Road. Cllr Mark Parker, the councillor representing this area said: "I am really impressed with what the group has achieved in just a few hours.  It is great to see these youngsters give up their free time for the benefit of others."

Organiser and founder of the group Aminah Laiqah said: “It was great to be able to give something back to our community and prove that young people do care and hopefully we’ve inspired more to get involved.”

Fellow organiser Jack Scott added: “The day was really enjoyable, and the residents’ reaction confirmed that it was a job well done.”

Social Action is a perfect example of the Big Society in action. It is about people of all ages and backgrounds coming together, working voluntarily for the benefit of their local community. It is anticipated that similar projects will be organised in the near future.
