Today is World Asthma Day 2024, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about asthma, a chronic respiratory condition characterised by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
In the UK, 7.2 million people are affected by asthma, and it results in 60,000 hospital admissions a year. Asthma attacks kill three people in the UK each day and every ten seconds someone has a potentially life-threatening asthma attack. Seeing my Mum struggling to breathe due to Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, I am committed to supporting those across Erewash with lung conditions.
I will continue to raise awareness of these conditions in Parliament, advocate for policies that enhance accessibility and affordability of asthma care and meet Erewash’s local Breathe Easy group to understand the issues affecting those with lung conditions.
I know anyone with a lung condition in Erewash will be made very welcome at the Breathe Easy group which meets in Ilkeston. They meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 2pm at Littlewick Medical Centre. More information about Ilkeston’s Breathe Easy group be found online here.
