Staff and pupils at Ilkeston’s Chaucer Junior School today welcomed new Education Secretary, The Rt. Hon. Nicky Morgan MP to their school, together with Prospective Erewash MP Maggie Throup and current MP Jessica Lee.
Whist on the visit, the Minister was given a tour of the school by members of the School Council, held a question and answer session with teachers and was shown the award winning Chaucer School Garden, which was designed by pupils and exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show.
Following the visit Prospective MP Maggie said: “It has been a real privilege to welcome the Minister Nicky Morgan to Chaucer today. I wanted to show her what a marvellous job the whole school community is doing as they move towards their goal of becoming an Outstanding school.
“I am proud that under the Conservatives, schools across Erewash, including Chaucer have received over £10 million through the Pupil Premium, ensuring that disadvantaged children are given the support they need to fulfil their potential.
“I want to reassure schools, as well as local parents, that I will work tirelessly to ensure that this level of support continues across all Erewash schools so that we can give our future generations the best start in life.”
Local MP Jessica Lee also commented: “It has been great to join the Education Secretary and our Prospective Erewash MP Maggie Throup on today’s visit.
“In Erewash we are lucky to have some fantastic teams of teachers, parents and school governors, all of whom are working hard to make sure our children receive the very best education.
“The pupils at Chaucer are a real credit to their school, and I would like to thank them, as well as Mrs Upton and all her team for hosting this visit.”
