Erewash MP, Jessica Lee, and local Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, Maggie Throup, recently joined The Mayor of Erewash and other fundraisers for an overnight charity sleep out in support of homeless charity, The Canaan Trust.
The annual fundraising event, which took place on Friday 25th April in Long Eaton town centre, aims to raise awareness of the needs of the homeless community locally, as well as to raise funds to support the work of the Trust.
Commenting on the event, Maggie Throup said: “For me, this has truly been an eye opening experience. Whilst on the night the weather wasn't great, it helped me understand what the homeless community have to endure day in day out.
“The Canaan Trust does a fantastic job in supporting the homeless community right across Erewash and the surrounding areas. Not only does the Trust provide a hot meal and a bed for the night, but they also go that extra mile and offer advice and training, to help people to get their lives back on track in the longer term.
“I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the event and look forward to supporting the team at the Canaan Trust in the future.”
Jessica Lee MP commented: “Three years ago, when I first suggested a sleep out to raise awareness, in discussion at the Canaan Trust, I didn't realise that this would become an annual fixture in the Erewash calendar. Now it has! The sleep out has expanded in attendance every year and I'm really delighted about it. This always proves to be a valuable experience for me as the local MP and I enjoyed meeting the other participants this year.
"I know that the Canaan Trust is a real asset to Erewash. They not only get those in need a home but help young people with every aspect of rebuilding their lives for a brighter future. I know, through my community office, the excellent network of community groups we have in Erewash to help others.
"I am also extremely pleased that I was able to raise over £500 in sponsorship for taking part this year, which will now go to supporting the work that the Trust does all year round."
