Local MP Maggie Throup has reacted swiftly to news that Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy (OIEA) is to close its sixth form at the end of the academic year (July 2016).
Speaking about today’s announcement Maggie said:
“This news has come as a shock and is deeply disappointing for all those affected, not least to new students who began their studies in September.
“I will be meeting with the Principal of OIEA tomorrow (Thursday 8th October 2015) to discuss the immediate future of the Sixth Form and what measures are being put in place to support students and staff at this time.
“In the coming days I will hold similar conversations with Derbyshire County Council and the Ormiston Trust, as well as seeking an urgent meeting with the Secretary of State for Education to explore the possibility of funding being made available to keep the Sixth Form open until July 2017, which would allow new year 12 students to complete their A Levels at the school.
“I will of course keep the local community updated on any progress I make as and when new information becomes available. In the mean anyone wanting to contact me directly about the planned closure can do so by emailing maggie@maggiethroup.com or telephoning my community office on 0115 9722419.”
