Maggie Throup, Prospective MP for Erewash, has welcomed the new National Infrastructure Plan which sets out clear plans for investment in infrastructure, including roads, rail, and local flood defences. In particular, Ms Throup has welcomed plans to open up the hard shoulder on the M1 between junctions 24 and 25 to reduce congestion and increase capacity.
Ms Throup said: “Locally, everyone knows that the M1 between junction 24 and junction 25 is heavily congested, affecting our local economy. I’m delighted that funds are being put in place to open up the hard shoulder on this stretch and use smart technology to keep the traffic moving.
“At the same time, I will be calling upon the Secretary of State to ensure money is put aside for noise barriers to be installed along the western side of this stretch of motorway to stop the incessant noise affecting Breaston residents.
“I will also be asking for a further evaluation of the noise levels on the eastern side of the motorway to ensure adequate noise protection is in place as cars will be travelling nearer to our residential areas as a result of the hard shoulder running.
“Ultimately this investment will mean more jobs and growth, helping to deliver a better future for hardworking people in Erewash.”
Ms Throup has also welcomed additional infrastructure schemes across the East Midlands which include:
At least 215 flood defence schemes to reduce flood risk.
9 major Strategic Road Network projects.
£60 million national funding pot for local stations to bid for funding to improve access.
In total across Britain, the plan commits to £15 billion of investment in roads and £2.3 billion in flood defences, confirms our £38 billion Network Rail programme, and will ensure 95 per cent of premises have access to superfast broadband by 2017.
