Responding to today’s announcement by the Prime Minister that she is to seek Parliamentary approval to hold a General Election on Thursday 8th June 2017, Maggie Throup, Member of Parliament for Erewash has released the following statement:
“On Wednesday 29th March, the Prime Minister gave effect to the democratic decision of the British people, by formally triggering Article 50.
“It is now clear that we must have a period of strong and stable leadership to enable the Government to secure the best possible European exit deal. I therefore fully support Theresa May’s decision to hold an early General Election on Thursday 8th June, in order to strengthen Britain’s hand during Brexit negotiation, both at home and abroad.
“The choice at the ballot box will be clear; strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives – or weak and unstable coalition government, led by Jeremy Corbyn.
“At the last election, like the Conservatives nationally, I put forward a plan for Erewash which I have since been working hard to put into action. This has included:
- Campaigning to improve our local infrastructure by lobbying Government for a new 25a M1 Motorway Junction.
- Fighting to get the best deal possible for our towns and villages with regards to HS2, including campaigning for a tunnel under Long Eaton.
- Tackling Crime and antisocial behaviour locally, by engaging with the Police to produce a coherent strategy to tackle problem hotspots.
- Improving Jobs and training opportunities by hosting a Jobs & Community Fair.
- Securing the opening of the new railway station at Ilkeston.
“It is because of this and my determination to continue to deliver for the people of Erewash that I can today confirm I will be again seeking the nomination to stand as the Conservative Party Candidate.
“On a personal note, it has been the greatest honour of my life to represent the residents of Erewash in Parliament since 2015. I would like to thank everyone who continues to support me and I look forward to the campaign that lies ahead.
“Anyone who would like to join my campaign team to secure a Conservative victory on 8th June can do so by emailing me at maggie@maggiethroup.com.”
