Maggie Throup OBE MP, Member of Parliament for Erewash is delighted that the Safety of Rwanda Bill has passed it final legislative hurdle in the House of Commons and is set to become law.
The Safety of Rwanda Bill, introduced by the Government to deter migrants from making perilous crossings across the Channel, will receive Royal Assent in the coming days. Maggie, who has been urging the Government to tackle illegal migration, continuously backed the flagship Safety of Rwanda Bill throughout its passage in the House of Commons.
The passing of the Safety of Rwanda Bill will allow the Government to commence its final phase of operational planning to get the flights to Rwanda off the ground. It is expected that the first flights will take off within 10 – 12 weeks, with multiple flights every month.
Maggie said:
When chatting to Erewash residents, I know many are concerned about illegal migration. I am delighted that Parliament has been able to pass this landmark piece of legislation which I know will be well received in Erewash.
The Government can now start the process of sending flights of illegal migrants to Rwanda, making clear that if you come to the UK illegally, you will not be able to stay. This announcement is also on top of the excellent news that the Novotel Asylum Accommodation Centre on Bostocks Lane is set to close in July 2024.
Whilst the Conservatives have a plan to tackle illegal migration, Labour have consistently voted against legislation in Parliament and pledged to scrap our Rwanda plan, which would have taken us back to square one. The Conservatives are tackling the issues that matter the most to Erewash residents.”
This legislation ensures Rwanda is deemed a safe country for the purposes of relocating people, including in UK courts and tribunals. It also makes clear that UK Parliament is sovereign, giving the Government the power to reject interim blocking measures imposed by European courts.
