Erewash MP Maggie Throup recently met with Government Health Minister Alistair Burt to discuss the growing crisis in Derbyshire's Adult Social Care as a result of unprecedented cuts made by Derbyshire County Council.
Commenting on her meeting with Mr Burt, Maggie said:
"I was truly shocked to hear that Derbyshire County Council is set to shut Hillcrest care home in Kirk Hallam, in the face of significant opposition from both local residents and healthcare practitioners.
“This was justified by saying that more elderly people could be cared for in the community, however we have since learnt that the County Council also plan to axe sheltered housing wardens across Derbyshire from March 2016.
“Whilst I appreciate we do need to make significant savings in local government, this seems like a sustained attack on the elderly and vulnerable of Erewash, rather than a joined up policy decision.
“As a Government, we have announced a package of support specifically aimed at helping local councils deliver adult social care, including giving them powers to increase the Council Tax by up to 2%, and so I felt it necessary to flag the situation up with the Department for Health as a matter of urgency.”
