This weekend marked the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino.
The Battle of Monte Cassino was a series of four military assaults by the Allies against German forces in Italy during the Italian Campaign of World War Two. The objective was to break through the Winter Line and advance towards Rome.
The Battle of Monte Cassino was one of the toughest fought battles of World War Two. Despite the successes of the campaign, the Allied forces lost over 55,000 service personnel in a four-month period.
On Saturday to commemorate this important Battle, the Royal British Legion’s Ilkeston Branch held a remembrance service at the Cenotaph in Ilkeston’s Market Place.
It was an honour to attend this service and pay tribute to the courageous servicemen who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.
