Maggie Throup OBE MP, Member of Parliament for Erewash has welcomed the announcement that Derbyshire County Council will receive £5.1 million of Government funding to boost greener bus services across the County.
Derbyshire County Council is one of twenty-five Councils across the country that will receive funding to transition the bus fleet to zero emissions. The £5.1 million investment will make local bus fleets more efficient, comfortable and sustainable while improving the local journeys that so many people rely on.
It has also been announced that the £2 bus fare cap will be extended until 31 December 2024.
Maggie said:
Many people across Erewash rely on the bus network for school, work and leisure. Often these journeys are made by diesel buses which are harmful to the environment and our health.
I am delighted that Derbyshire County Council will receive £5.1 million to help transition the buses to a zero-emission fleet. This will enhance bus services for Erewash passengers by making them more efficient, comfortable, and environmentally friendly.
It is also great news that the Government is extending the £2 bus fare cap until the end of the year, meaning that Erewash passengers can get around for less.
“This investment highlights the Government's commitment to improving local transport and sustainability. I look forward to seeing the positive impact of greener bus services for Erewash residents.”
Derbyshire County Council’s funding is part of the second round of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) programme, prioritising rural areas to improve local transport infrastructure. This initiative will introduce electric buses in towns, villages, and cities across England.
