Erewash MP Maggie Throup has begun her bid to save Ladycross House Local Authority Care Home from closure, with the launch of an official petition which will be presented to Parliament.
The petition, which is available to sign on Maggie’s website at maggiethroup.com/petition-save-ladycross as well as in her Community Office, reads as follows:
The Petition of the residents of Erewash,
Declares that Ladycross House Local Authority Care Home, which serves the community of Sandiacre and surrounding area, provides an excellent, caring home for residents; and notes that a decision to close this care home will have significant negative consequences for residents, their families and staff, in addition to local NHS provision.
The Petitioners therefore request the House of Commons to urge Derbyshire County Council to keep Ladycross House Local Authority Care Home open and, at the same time, design and implement a long-term plan for the care of elderly residents, not only in Erewash, but across the county of Derbyshire.
And the petitioners remain, etc.
Speaking about the proposed closure, Maggie commented:
“I am deeply concerned that Derbyshire County Council are proposing to close Ladycross House, which has recently undergone extensive refurbishment at great cost to the taxpayer, without having a sustainable long-term plan for the future care of elderly residents, not only in Erewash, but across the County.
“Having recently visited residents living at the Home, as well as speaking from my own personal experience of having a close family member in care, I know that the service they provide is about much more than just buildings.
“This short-sighted decision will have a significant impact on the Home’s residents, their families and staff, in addition to having wider consequences for our local NHS provision. That is why I am determined to reverse it and so I am urging as many people as possible to sign-up to my petition and join the campaign fight to save our care home!”
In addition, whilst strict Parliamentary protocol prohibits Maggie from mounting a similar campaign to save Beechcroft Local Authority Care Home (West Hallam), as it falls outside her Erewash Constituency, she will be writing to the Leader of Derbyshire County Council, Cllr. Barry Lewis, to express the concerns of the residents she represents.
