It was an honour to attend Squadron Leader Arthur Clowes’ plaque unveiling ceremony at Sawley War Memorial on Sunday.
Sqn Ldr Clowes, from Sawley, was an acclaimed World War Two fighter pilot and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for shooting down many Luftwaffe planes during the Battle of Britain - remarkably he even survived a mid-air crash.
Until recently, locals did not know that Sqn Ldr Clowes was from Sawley. To commemorate Sqn Ldr Clowes and ensure that he is always remembered, a plaque was unveiled at Sawley War Memorial to honour one of our local heroes.
It was a privilege to attend with local cadet groups, the RAF, local uniformed organisations and Councillors to pay our respects to such an important individual who helped defend our country.
More information about Sqd Ldr Arthur Clowes can be found on the Battle of Britain London Monument’s website here.
