Dear Resident,
Today our new Prime Minister has announced the much-needed measures that will be put in place to help families and businesses ride the storm of rising energy costs as the result of Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine. This is immediate action that will help people with the cost of their gas and electricity bills - giving people the certainty they are able to get through the winter, able to have the energy supplies they need, and are able to afford it.
We cannot just put a sticking plaster on the issue, which is why we will increase our energy supplies in the long term by opening up more supply in the North Sea and building more power stations, along with the use of small nuclear reactors pioneered locally by Rolls-Royce in Derby.
The measures the Government is putting in place includes an Energy Price Guarantee (EPG), giving people certainty with their bills, will apply from 1 October and will discount the unit cost for gas and electricity use. This guarantee, which includes the temporary suspension of green levies, means that from 1 October a typical household will pay no more than £2,500.00 per year for each of the next two years. This will save the typical household £1000.00 a year and is in addition to the £400.00 Energy Bill Support Scheme.
This new guarantee will apply to all households and the Government will also support all businesses, charities and public sector organisations with their energy costs this winter, offering them an equivalent guarantee for six months.
Locally we have some great community champions that really make a difference to residents. Just before children went back to school, Long Eaton Rotary organised an amazing ‘Family Fun Day’ at West Park. I’ve attended these events on every previous occasion and I can happily say that this year’s was the biggest and the best so far and will take a lot of beating next year. It was great to be able to help organise the ever-popular sack race which resulted in a few tumbles, but thankfully no injuries. Huge thanks to all Rotarians involved on the day, especially Barbara James, and to Ivy, the President of Long Eaton Interact, the youth arm of Rotary.
Another annual event that I always enjoy is the memorable service at St Michael and All Angels Church, Stanton-by-Dale to commemorate the airmen who tragically lost their lives on a training exercise on 31st August 1944. With more and more locals attending the event each year, I am looking forward to the official unveiling of the permanent memorial to the young men who lost their lives so tragically.
Finally, I am delighted to again be hosting The Erewash Jobs and Community Fair, which this year will be held at the Chatsworth Arts Centre and Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton on Tuesday 27th September 2022 between 10am and 4pm. The Fair will be a fantastic opportunity for those people either seeking work or a change of career to speak to a range of potential employers from across the region about the opportunities on offer. I look forward to as many people as possible joining me at the Duchess Theatre on the day.
With best wishes,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
